Local strawberries headed to Dallas farmers markets

Strawberries are ready a bit early in Texas and are headed to Dallas farmers markets. The fruit is a relative newcomer to North Texas, but with enough production it can now be called a real season which could last from now to possibly mid-June, if it doesn't get too hot.

Cowtown Farmers market is where the first strawberries of the season went. It is set up outside Texas Outdoors on the Weatherford traffic circle in southwest Fort Worth, and includes produce grown only within a 150-mile radius. Last weekend that included beautiful greens, herbs and young celery from Mineral Wells Aquaponics, and veggies and greens from Tin Top Farms (Weatherford), to name a few.

Opening day for the new Oak Cliff satellite of Good Local Markets at Tyler Street United Methodist Church is Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lots of the same vendors that sell at the White Rock Good Local Market are expected and it will be coming in April. Highway 19 Produce and Berries expects to have its strawberries from Athens ready to sell.
