Apples hit record prices in New Zealand supermarkets

After a delayed harvest for apples in New Zealand, prices for the fruit are hitting record highs in supermarkets around the country. The prices are averaging more than $5 a kilogram, according to the latest Statistics New Zealand figures.

Apple prices usually rise in January but are currently at their highest level ever, with a kilo of apples at $5.04 compared with $3.60 last month, a rise of 40 per cent, Statistic NZ's consumer prices senior manager, Jason Attewell, said.

"Apples have been in short supply so far this year and this is reflected in higher prices." Attewell said.

Managing director of Jina's World of Fresh Produce, Ajay Jina, said the shortage has been caused by a late start to the apple season due to the "weird summer weather", and irrigation issues in the Hawke's Bay region.
