The National Plum Table will be created next Wednesday in the town of San Rafael, south of Mendoza. The goal of the table is to coordinate public actions and the private agricultural industrial production so that Argentina continues to be the world's fourth biggest producers of this fruit; which Argentina exports dried, especially to Brazil and Russia, competing with Chile and California.
"The goal is for Argentina to maintain its fourth place, with Mendoza at the top, as a producer for the world's industry," officials of the Ministry of Agricultural industry and Technology of this province stated.
The meeting will be held as the sector has had huge losses, as nearly 70% of the crops were lost to the frost, in this year's harvest. According to official spokesmen, "the southern city of San Rafael is getting ready to host the first meeting of the National Plum Table, which will be held on Wednesday, within the framework of the national policy of working with the different agricultural industrial sectors."
Another encouraging fact is that, as of this year, Argentina joined the International Plum Association through the recently formed Ciruelas del Sur (Southern Plums) Consortium of Exporters of Plums of Eastern Mendoza, which is the first member in the International Plum Association representing Argentina.
The objectives of this association are to coordinate efforts to protect the interests of the products, increase world consumption of dried plums, ensure the exchange of current information on the production and movement of markets, and organize meetings among members on economic issues.
