Packing company fined £50,000 after worker gets hair stuck in belt
After her hair got stuck, Annie suffered extensive injuries to her scalp and one of her ears when disaster struck on November 7 , 2015, the Irish Mirror reports. It is understood she had been trying to fulfill the 89 day requirement of rural employment to extend her holiday visa for a second year at the time.
Local newspaper The Age reports that the firm, T&R Contracting Shepparton Pty Ltd, pleaded guilty at Shepparton Magistrates Court to one breach of the OHS Act 2004 for failing to provide a safe working environment by not providing instruction and training.
They were fined $60,000 - approximately £49,411.18. The company was also ordered to pay legal costs of $8,091, about £6,663.10.
An online fundraising page set up around the time of the incident has raised around £29,246.48 ($35,514 ) for Annie's recovery.
