Yarra Valley Australia sees late strawberry harvest

Yarra Valley is one of Australia's largest producers of strawberries and has seen a late harvest this year. After the delay, the season is peaking now however, according to Strawberries Australia Victorian president, Sam Violi.

According to Violi, the season was about two to three weeks late compared to the previous years when the strawberries were ready for harvest.

“We would have liked to have seen warmer weather during the spring, it was quite wet during November and because of the late start the season is peaking now,” Mr Violi said. “There is a little excess fruit around because at this time of year there is more competition. While initially the quality wasn’t great it has really picked up and the fruit tastes good.”

Mr Violi said he hoped summer wouldn’t bring too many heatwaves because it had such an impact on strawberries.

He said prices were average when the season kicked off last year but had picked up since then.
