Specialists estimate that this year's plum harvest in Moldova will reach 85,000 tons, returning to normalcy after last year's poor yield. Out of this harvest, 70,000 tons are planned for export.
Approximately 17,000 tons of plums have already been exported over the past two months, compared to about 10,900 tons exported during the same period in 2022. A total of 11,340 tons of plums from this year's harvest have already been shipped to various European markets, including Germany, Austria, Croatia, and the United Kingdom. During the same period last year, 6,442 tons were exported to the EU and UK markets.
The most exported plum varieties from Moldova are Stanley, President, and Kakanjska Rana, known for their aromas and taste qualities. Investments in fruit quality, compliance with international standards, and assistance from development partners have stimulated the export of plums produced in Moldova.
To remain competitive in the EU markets, Moldovan plum producers are adopting international standards and certifying their production and post-harvest processes by GlobalG.A.P./GRASP and SMETA standards.
