OrriApp implements new functionalities

Orri Running Committee extends control of its mandarins to all links in the value chain

OrriApp, the first mobile application designed to identify plots that are exploiting protected varieties of citrus fruits without proper authorization, specifically the ORRI mandarin variety, has been renewed with new functionalities. The new app allows Orri Running Committee (ORC) associates to notify the entity of any deficiencies in the identification of the Orri mandarin at the points of sale.

This improvement extends the control over the Orri mandarin to all the links of the value chain, from production and processing to final distribution and wholesale.

Through the OrriApp, associates may inform ORC when they observe that varieties have been mixed or when there is erroneous labeling, either when the Orri is labeled as a different variety or vice versa.

ORC, a leading entity in the management of protected varieties through an approach that is based on permanent technological innovation, launches this new tool after the success of the first version of the application, which allowed identifying practically all of the farms that didn't have a production license for the Orri mandarin variety.

Technology to ensure profitability
The Orri mandarin continues to be the most sought-after variety in recent years, with average field sales prices that are 22% to 28% higher than the next most sought-after mandarin. One of the reasons it achieves higher prices is because it is a protected variety. The Community Plant Variety Office granted it this status until 2043, which will allow licensees to enjoy their exclusive exploitation for several decades.

More than 57,000 tons of Orri mandarin were marketed in the 2019-2020 season; a higher volume than expected. In addition, this variety was considered the best valued mandarin on the market for the fifth year consecutive, reaching an average price of 1.15 euro per kilo in the field.

31.09% of the mandarins sold correspond to the province of Huelva, 21% to the province of Valencia, 18.71% to Murcia, 9.08% to Almeria, 7.93 % to the province of Castellon, 7.28% to Alicante, and 4.9% to the province of Seville.

The Orri mandarin's consumer recognition has skyrocketed thanks to its excellent organoleptic qualities, how easy it is to peel it, its healthy attributes and its extraordinary shelf life.
