Chinese ginger exports to Europe grew again this season

The export price of Chinese ginger has frequently fluctuated in recent months. The price showed a general rising trend between the beginning of September and National Day [1 October, 2020], but has been relatively stable since then. The current price is quite high, but demand from overseas market is still strong. Trade is smooth and European market demand in particular is extremely strong this year.

Winter is generally the peak period of ginger consumption in Europe, which is the main reason European market demand is growing stronger now. The overall market supply in Europe is limited and consumer demand is growing, which is why European buyers show great interest in Chinese ginger despite its high price.

Ginger processing factory

"We have ginger plantations in Guangxi and Shandong that cover a surface area of more than 100 hectares. We produce conventional ginger and organic ginger. We sell our ginger under our own brand 'Harvest'. Our products include air-dried ginger and fresh ginger. We export our ginger products to markets in Europe and North America. We expect our export volume to exceed 500 shipping containers this year." This is according to Terry of Shandong Harvest Agricultural Products Co., Ltd.

Ginger

"The price has shown several periods of sustained increase and is currently more than 60% higher than around this time last year. The main reason for the price increase is the the higher material cost of the new crop ginger. The export volume steadily grows as well in the traditional peak period of Chinese ginger export, which begins in late November or early December. The price is expected to remain steady in the second half of this export season, but it is still too early to say anything with certainty. The export price is shaped by many different factors," said Terry.

Fresh ginger

One of the factors that shape the conditions in the ginger market is the global outbreak of Covid-19. Chinese ginger exporters are again faced with challenges as the second wave of lockdown measures engulfs Europe. However, according to Terry, the impact is limited. "Ginger is beneficial for the immune system, so market demand remains strong during this pandemic."
