Export price of Chinese garlic is 25% lower than last August

Product quality of Chinese garlic from Jinxiang is better than last year

The price of Chinese garlic from the warehouses of Jinxiang continued to drop in the period between February and May, as a result of the outbreak of Covid-19 around the Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020]. Garlic farmers and traders did not have high hopes for the price of fresh garlic. The opening price has already been quite low in recent years because the production volume per hectare continues to grow. However, international market demand for garlic rapidly expanded in May. The export volumes of old garlic from storage as well as fresh garlic both broke historical records.

Mr. Henry Zhang visits the processing factory

"The volume of old garlic from 2019 is already quite small. The old garlic reserve will not have a significant impact on the export market for fresh garlic. Old garlic and fresh garlic struggled for dominance in May and June, which had a definite impact on fresh garlic sales. The export price of Chinese garlic is now 25% lower than in August of last year." This is according to Mr. Henry Zhang, CEO of Jining Fangda Import and Export Co., Ltd.

Garlic processing factory

"The product quality of fresh garlic is much better than around this time last year. The garlic skin is quite thick this year and the color is bright. In addition, the garlic did not suffer as much from insect pests as in previous years. The garlic does sprout earlier than in previous years because the temperature has been high and rainfall has been near continuous. We mainly purchase our garlic from several garlic cooperatives in Jinxiang. The product quality is stable and the garlic farmers have years of experience in garlic plantation and processing."

Mr. Henry Zhang visited the processing factory with overseas clients

"We supply red garlic, purple garlic, and white garlic. We sell them under our own brand name 'Fangda' and under the brand names of our clients. We export our garlic to Malaysia, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America, and we also export small volumes of garlic to Europe. Market demand is highest for red and purple garlic. We are currently working hard to develop our market share in Europe and Central and South America."
