Mexico has maintained its leadership in the list of the largest exporters of avocados in 2018. Other leaders in the supply of avocados are also Spain, Chile, the USA, Kenya, South Africa, New Zealand and Colombia.
Industry participants have seen rapid growth in global avocado imports by 18% per year over the past 5 years. In total, in 2018, 2.5 million tons of avocados worth $ 6.1 billion were imported. More than 55% of the global volume falls to the United States, the Netherlands and France. Together, these countries purchased 1.5 million tons of fruit for $ 3.5 billion.
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), avocado production in 2017 is estimated at 4.1 million tons. The main production sites are concentrated in Mexico, Peru and Indonesia. 2.8 million tons of avocados are cultivated annually in these countries, 68.4% of the global volume.
Since the usual territories for growing avocados are Latin America and the Caribbean, about 70% of world production falls on these regions. On average for 2016-2018. 4.3 million tons of fruit per year were harvested in these production zones.
Experts noted that avocados are especially in demand in the US and EU markets, where per capita consumption in 2018 was 3.1 kg and 1.2 kg, respectively.
