The Myanmar Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation will start certifying organic crops this very year, a senior official said. According to U Myint Swe, director of the coffee crop branch under the Agriculture Department, the certification will be in line with regulations established by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, of which Myanmar is a member.
“We’ll carry out with the plan within months,” he told reporters at an event for mushroom growers and exporters in Nay Pyi Taw this week. “We will announce rules regarding the certification soon. Our organic standards are in line with those of ASEAN. They were drawn up only after being standardised with those of the other ASEAN countries, taking into account the climate of Myanmar.”
The Ministry is now teaching farmers how to remove chemical residue from their crops.
