Price at origin currently stands at 45 cents per kilo

Good prices for Spanish potatoes given the shortage in Europe

The shortage of potatoes in Europe is causing their price to increase, reaching 45 cents / kg at origin. With the potato campaign in Seville already completed and that in Cartagena about to finish, good prices are expected coinciding with the campaign kick-off in Castile-Leon. The question is what will happen from now until the first week of July, when the harvest will start in Castile-La Mancha, especially in Albacete.

Given these circumstances, the risk is precisely that the prospect of obtaining a good price will cause growers to hurry, and to start at the same time as everyone else, causing prices to collapse, says the president of Asopocyl, Marco Martin.

For this reason, Asopocyl has recommended the harvests to be carried out in as staggered a manner as possible, always in agreement with the operator.

For producers, the crop's quality will be a key factor. While the potato acreage in Castile-Leon has been reduced by 500 hectares and the yields will not be very high, the atmospheric conditions are contributing to the production of a high quality potato.
