Ghana's vegetable exporters face growing uncertainty as they await clarification on a possible eviction from their long-established base in Cantonments, a move they say could severely disrupt exports of highly perishable produce. The Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association of Ghana (VEPEAG), which represents more than 1,000 producers across seven regions, relies on the site for its proximity to Kotoka International Airport, enabling rapid movement of okra, chili, shallots, and other vegetables into cold storage and onto daily flights.
Concerns intensified after neighbouring Agric Mechanization Services was relocated and its land taken over by private developers. VEPEAG president Dr. Felix Mawuli Kamassah said more than 5,000 jobs are at stake and warned that relocation without suitable infrastructure could lead to export delays and renewed phytosanitary issues. The association recently invested €400,000 in a new cold room and stressed that any new site must remain close to the airport to protect Ghana's export competitiveness.
