Hornet detected in Auckland prompts biosecurity alert

Biosecurity New Zealand has urged Auckland residents to remain alert for sightings of yellow-legged hornets (Vespa velutina) after a queen hornet was found starting to build a nest in Glenfield.

The nest was removed by biosecurity officers on 17 October, according to Mike Inglis, North Commissioner at Biosecurity New Zealand. While the immediate threat was addressed, officials warn that undetected nests could pose a risk as summer begins.

"This is the first time we've found a queen yellow-legged hornet in New Zealand," said Inglis. "We responded quickly to this threat, but we need the public's help to eliminate any further risk."

Earlier this year, two male hornets were detected in the Auckland suburbs of Grafton and Albany. Inglis said the country currently remains free of established hornet populations and that surveillance efforts aim to keep it that way.

The yellow-legged hornet is considered a biosecurity concern due to its potential effect on pollinators and fruit production. The species preys on bees, wasps, and flies, and also feeds on ripe fruit and nectar, posing risks to both beekeepers and growers. It may also compete with native insects and birds for food.

Authorities have asked the public to report any sightings to the biosecurity hotline to support monitoring and early detection efforts.
