Jim Ertler - Premium Fresh:

“At the moment, onions are a bit short, the market is firm, and prices are what they should be"

Onion planting is finishing off in Tasmania, while Queensland is already harvesting the new crop. New South Wales will start the harvest in December, and Tasmania will follow in the New Year.

"November and December can be a tricky time on the onion market as we still have the old crop, while some states are already harvesting the new season onions," said Jim Ertler from Premium Fresh in Tasmania. "At the moment the domestic market is firm, and prices are good. We are waiting for the Queensland season to start, but I expect the market to stay firm and prices to hold."

Premier Fresh sends the majority of their onions to the domestic Australian market; the main export market is Europe, where it generally has fixed contracts. "The costs are too high to speculate on the European market," explains Jim.

"Planting this season has been tough as it has been very wet and windy. We are running a bit late, but not as late as some growers. The crop may catch up a bit, given the right growing conditions, but some may be late. We will have enough early onions to fulfil our export orders."
