El Bierzo expects to harvest 14.5 million kilos of Conference pears this season

Spanish El Bierzo's conference pear harvest season is nearing its halfway point, with numbers exceeding initial forecasts. According to Pablo Linares, manager of Alimentos de Calidad del Bierzo, this year's output could reach nearly 14.5 million kilos, half a million more than originally estimated.

"We're very happy. There's so much fruit entering the warehouses each day that we think our forecasts may have fallen short," stated Linares, who also highlighted the excellent quality of the fruit. The recent drops in temperature and rain have favored the seasonal workers' work, as they didn't affect the fruit and made work in the fields more pleasant.

Growers in El Bierzo continue to monitor the reineta apple to determine when to harvest. Linares noted that cooler temperatures have slowed ripening, possibly delaying the start until just after mid-next week. The outlook for the reineta apple remains positive, with healthy, well-formed fruit and the usual russeting. Production forecasts are steady at about 2 million kilos.
