As India's apple harvest from Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir reaches markets, the country's apple import sector is experiencing a slowdown, says Ketankumar Chavda, owner of fresh produce importer and trader Shree Nilkanth Agro Products. "With local apples now available in abundance, especially in northern and western India, demand for imported apples has declined." However, he adds that imports remain vital in meeting consumer preferences and supply gaps, particularly in southern states where domestic production is limited.
"Currently, both Kashmir and Himachal apple seasons are underway, offering varieties such as Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Royal Gala, and Green Smith, making Indian apples more accessible and affordable right now," Chavda explains.

The domestic apple season is expected to last until mid-November. Chavda highlights that although profit margins tend to be generally higher on imported apples overall, domestic apples dominate sales volume and profitability during the harvest season due to their lower prices. "Importers usually focus on either imported or domestic apples, responding to market demand and price fluctuations. Wholesale prices for Kashmir's Delicious varieties range from USD 0.6 to 0.8 per kg, with Gala varieties commanding slightly higher prices between USD 0.9 and 1.4 per kg. These prices are anticipated to rise as festive demand grows from October onwards."

"Looking ahead, we expect the domestic apple supply to hold strong through mid-November, which will limit the need for imports in the short term. However, as the season progresses, strategically planned imports will be critical in maintaining consistent apple availability across India's markets," Chavda concludes.
