High expectations for upcoming black fig season

After Turkish fruit exporters have seen quite a few hardships due to the frosts in April, they are looking forward to the positive fig season, says Akin Soyleyen, marketing manager for Turkish fruit exporter Aksun: "This year's black fig season has begun with high expectations, especially after the significant challenges many fruit sectors faced due to the April frost. For growers and exporters, black figs represent a beacon of hope following the difficulties of the last three to four months and amid ongoing high inflation, which continues to drive up final product costs. These rising costs have put considerable pressure on growers, who are striving to deliver a quality crop."

In the region where the fig season has already started, the season is looking positive, Soyleyen explains. "The season kicked off in the second half of July in the Aydin region, where supply looked promising, with abundant yields of large-sized fruit. However, the hot weather has spurred rapid fruit growth, which must be matched by demand, and for now, demand is strong. Following Aydin, the Bursa region, renowned for its famous Bursa Black Figs harvest, began in the second week of August. Early indicators for the season are positive, and we expect it to last until November."

"Given strong demand from both the EU and Asia, we do not expect significant supply-demand imbalances for black figs this year. Traditionally, annual demand has remained stable. However, 2024 has proven exceptional, reaching export volumes in the $80M range, compared to previous years, which typically hovered around $60M. This trend aligns with the optimistic outlook among exporters for black figs, and we remain hopeful for a successful season.'' Soyleyen concludes.
