During the presentation of its half-year results in July, the Carrefour group announced that it had entered into exclusive negotiations with Italy's NewPrinces, intending to sell its entire business in Italy (1,188 Carrefour-branded stores, including 41 hypermarkets, 315 supermarkets, and more than 800 convenience stores).
The group explained that Carrefour Italy recorded a decline in sales in 2024, combined with a current operating income of -€67m [-78.7 million USD] and a negative net free cash flow of -€180m [-211.4 million USD], in a particularly difficult economic and competitive environment."
The transaction concerns all of Carrefour's activities in Italy and will enable the French retailer to "refocus on its key markets in Europe and Latin America." The transaction could close before the end of the 2025 financial year, with an estimated impact on the group's cash position of €240m [281.9 million USD]," according to the group's press release.
