Duisburg wholesale market:

"Turkish Kirkagac melons are enjoying increasing popularity"

The melon season is currently in full swing. Watermelons and Canary melons are particularly popular due to the summer weather. "We are currently sourcing watermelons of the standard Dumara variety from Spain, Italy, and Turkey. Supplies from the latter country are now picking up speed. Depending on the weather and demand, Turkish watermelons are usually available until the beginning of September," reports the stand manager of OKI Frisch Handels GmbH, based at the Duisburg wholesale market.

The price differences between the respective countries of origin are negligible, he continues. Currently, prices per kilo are around EUR 0.75/kg. "From mid-August, prices tend to fall slightly," says the wholesale market operator, which serves a wide range of customers, including restaurants, weekly markets, and ethnic shops throughout the Rhine-Ruhr area. In addition to watermelons and Canary melons, other varieties such as Galia, Cantaloupe, Piel de Sapo, and Kirkagac are also available. The characteristic striped melon variety is grown exclusively in Turkey. "We are noticing that this product is enjoying increasing popularity."

Turkish figs from mid-August
In addition to melons of all kinds, stone fruits continue to dominate the current market. "Turkish sugar apricots and black plums are now available in abundance. Cherries of Turkish origin, on the other hand, are scarce and expensive due to the frost in the spring. As a result, we are now mainly offering Spanish sweet cherries." In addition, this year's fig season has now officially begun. "The first green Italian figs arrived in week 26, which is relatively early. We are now waiting for the first Turkish figs, which are expected to arrive in mid-August."
