Hans van Maurik, The Farm Route:

"Corn in pouches a logical choice for foodservice and industrial processors"

Besides sous-vide cooked beets, Hans van Maurik also markets a wide range of sous-vide cooked corn under The Farm Route brand in the Dutch, Belgian, and German markets.

"With the sous-vide method, we cook our vegetables in their own juices, which preserves optimal flavour, nutritional value, and food safety. The range can be prepared in just minutes on the BBQ, in the oven, or the air fryer. The market is increasingly shifting from animal-based to plant-based products. Our offerings fit perfectly within this trend. They are an ideal choice for quick, high-quality meals with minimal effort," says Hans. "Corn is a versatile ingredient, commonly used in salads, sauces, and frozen dishes. Traditionally, this corn comes in cans, but more and more professionals are switching to pouch packaging. And that's no coincidence: pouches are demonstrably safer, more convenient, and more environmentally friendly than their metal counterparts."

"Canned cooked corn carries a potential food safety risk. Although the factory sterilisation process is rigorous, cans can still sustain minor damage during transport or storage. These dents and microcracks can lead to oxidation or microbial spoilage. There is also a risk of botulism if cans are mishandled or stored improperly – a rare but serious hazard that should be avoided in foodservice. Last year, several salad processors in Europe encountered issues with metal residues in their final products. As a result, Jumbo and Johma had to recall their salads."

"Pouches are made from multiple protective layers of plastic and aluminium foil, which are far more flexible and resistant to impact during transport. This packaging is designed to stay airtight and leak-proof, ensuring a longer and safer shelf life without the risk of corrosion or internal leakage. For foodservice and industrial processors, corn in pouches offers a safer and more sustainable alternative to canned corn," Hans explains. "Beyond safety, pouches are also more convenient and generate significantly less waste. They are easy to open and far less bulky than cans. In short, it's a win-win-win: better for the manufacturer, better for the consumer, and better for the planet."

"For industrial processors, every inch of storage space matters. Pouches are compact and stackable, allowing for more efficient use of space in both warehouses and coolers. For foodservice companies and industrial processors, the shift from canned corn to corn in pouches is a logical step. The benefits in terms of food safety, occupational safety, sustainability, and logistics are compelling. In an era where efficiency and responsibility toward people and the environment are essential, pouch packaging offers the future-proof solution the food sector needs," Hans concludes.
