The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released its Acreage Report, projecting a modest decline in U.S. potato acreage for 2025. The report estimates that U.S. farmers will plant 912,000 acres (approximately 369,000 hectares) this year, down from 930,000 acres (around 376,500 hectares) in 2024. Harvested acreage is expected to reach 905,900 acres (about 366,500 hectares), slightly below last year's 925,400 acres (374,400 hectares).
Idaho, the top potato-producing state, is projected to maintain both planted and harvested areas at 315,000 acres (127,500 hectares) and 314,500 acres (127,300 hectares) respectively, consistent with 2024 figures. Washington, the second-largest producer, is expected to see a reduction in planted area from 160,000 acres (64,800 hectares) to 145,000 acres (58,700 hectares). Harvested acreage is forecasted to drop from 159,500 acres (64,500 hectares) to 144,500 acres (58,460 hectares).
In Maine, planted acreage is projected to fall from 51,000 acres (20,600 hectares) to 48,000 acres (19,400 hectares), with harvested area dropping from 50,700 acres (20,500 hectares) to 47,700 acres (19,300 hectares). Minnesota is expected to see a reduction in planted area from 43,000 acres (17,400 hectares) to 41,000 acres (16,600 hectares), and harvested acreage from 42,600 acres (17,200 hectares) to 40,500 acres (16,400 hectares).
North Dakota is one of the few states seeing growth, with planted area increasing from 77,000 acres (31,200 hectares) to 78,000 acres (31,600 hectares), while harvested area remains steady at 76,000 acres (30,800 hectares). Wisconsin's figures are unchanged, with 70,000 acres (28,300 hectares) planted and 69,000 acres (27,900 hectares) harvested. Colorado will see a slight decrease in both planted and harvested acreage. Michigan remains stable at 47,500 acres (19,200 hectares) planted and 46,000 acres (18,600 hectares) harvested.
In California, planted area is forecasted to decline from 31,500 acres (12,750 hectares) to 30,500 acres (12,340 hectares), with harvested acreage falling by 1,000 acres (400 hectares). Texas, though a smaller producer, shows no change, maintaining 17,000 acres (6,880 hectares) planted and 16,900 acres (6,840 hectares) harvested.
The USDA's report, based on June survey data, includes figures from the 13 largest potato-producing states. The findings reflect the influence of water availability, crop rotation practices, market conditions, and contracting dynamics. As the first official acreage estimate for the year, the report offers key insights for growers and industry analysts.
