"Unlike the negative trend of declining vegetable prices, we are having a successful watermelon campaign," says Alessio Mattia, sales manager at Agrieuropa in Terracina, Italy.
"We are thrilled with the success of our watermelon production and sales thus far. Similarly, consumption rates meet our expectations," Mattia adds.

During the summer months, the landscape of Agrieuropa is defined by the presence of watermelons, which take center stage alongside a range of summer vegetables, including courgettes, cucumbers, peppers, and aubergines. The Dumara variety of watermelon will be harvested and sold until the beginning of September, while the mini variety will be harvested until the end of July.

"So far, we are satisfied, but we anticipate a shift in prices and demand going forward. A decline in quotations has been observed as production increases in other regions of Italy and other countries. Given the current high temperatures, the product in the countryside is tripling as well. However, if it is not harvested in time, it will spoil. Although demand is high, we believe there is currently more product than demand."
"We are also satisfied with the mini watermelon campaign, which has had steady, reasonable prices. Currently, we don't foresee a change in the commercial trend."

About ten days ago, Agrieuropa began harvesting watermelons in open fields, which will soon replace those from greenhouses.
Agrieuropa produces, processes, and packages vegetables in the heart of the Agro Pontino region in the province of Latina. The company operates on 400 hectares of land in the municipalities of Terracina, San Felice Circeo, Sabaudia, and Pontinia. Of this land, 303 hectares are covered by greenhouses and 100 hectares are open fields.
During the winter vegetable campaign, Agrieuropa handled a range of products, including small salads (such as valerian, spinach, and rocket), courgettes, parsley root, long turnips, round turnips, kohlrabi, radishes, and carrots. Most of these products were destined for export.

The trend for vegetables is different, almost dramatic. "Prices are low, and in some cases, we can't even cover production costs." The courgette trend has been negative and has never recovered. Cucumber prices should increase by a few cents by the end of the week because supplies are running low. We are producing peppers at full capacity, but we can hardly cover expenses. Similarly, prices for aubergines are low."
