An innovative all-paper packaging with different shapes and openings to improve consumer perception and increase product shelf-life. The Verona-based company Odorizzi, a founding member of the La Grande Bellezza Italiana (LGBI) business network, began studies in 2017 for an all-paper packaging, which has now reached its first results. In the coming days, LGBI will be entrusted with the first point-of-sale test of the series presented here, in collaboration with a leading chain that believes in the project.

"The objective of our innovative packaging is to increase internal visibility and shelf life by using pure virgin fibre food paper," explains Gianpaolo Odorizzi (photo), creator and experimenter of these packs." We are starting with two packs that are part of a larger series, adapted with various shapes and volumes to the types of products that they will contain. By the way, all rights are reserved and the packages are protected under industrial intellectual property laws."
Designed to tell stories and not just to transport and protect fruits and vegetables, "these packs are designed to give maximum visibility to the product inside and improve shelf life. A very precise design is found behind each pack. The holes, which may seem random, actually allow for better aeration of the product, a rapid cooling of the contents to maintain shelf-life, and allow any condensation to escape," says Leonardo Odorizzi. "The new packs are in line with the new EU PPWR regulation (on packaging and packaging waste) that will come into force next year after being approved last February."
Gianpaolo adds that "The study focuses on several objectives: providing a service at the moment of purchase thanks to the easy grip; maintaining a very high visibility; and letting the scent of the fruit be appreciated through the holes arranged by a special technical design.
The packages are also designed to be filled and closed by hand immediately and economically: "Wanting to enhance fruit at the right degree of ripeness for consumers, these packages can be filled by hand in warehouses with high °brix fruit, but could also be filled at the point of sale. In some models, the mechanical closures and processes have been protected by a patent due to the high level of innovation involved and specific design. We represent the vanguard when it comes to this point, having deposited the packaging in line with the new parameters indicated by the European Union's provisions on the protection of intellectual property.
"It is possible to automate filling and sealing only in case of large volumes, although they remain well-functioning even if carried out manually, thus avoiding plant costs. Not to mention that packages are fully recyclable and made of single materials to facilitate disposal by consumers. Finally, these packages can communicate because, while information can be included, it is the fruit itself that speaks to consumers by letting itself be seen without being handled, as is the case with the loose products," he concludes.
