Fruition Sales in Orange Cove, CA is offering its Valentine Pummelo this season. This hybrid, which features a yellow rind with a red interior and is a cross of a Siamese Sweet Pummelo, Ruby blood orange, and Dancy mandarin, was developed by the UC Riverside Research Center. It's not a new variety but it hasn't been widely commercially planted until recently. The company began harvesting in the last two weeks of January and anticipates harvest continuing for another four to six weeks.
The supply of the Valentine Pummelo is very good right now. "This year we've had more fruit than we've ever had because the trees are maturing. The volume will increase as more trees become more mature," says Sandra Bertelli of Fruition Sales- Ripe to you®, adding that the fruit is coming from the San Joaquin Valley, California. "We have had it for a few years, but this is the first year we've had promotable volume."

Getting past Valentine's Day
Demand has been good as the fruit becomes available in new national retailers which also helps improve the exposure of the citrus item to consumers. "Nationwide, it's also a big hit around Lunar New Year and of course Valentine's Day, though we're trying to get a bit away from that because the fruit just gets better in terms of color and flavor after Valentine's Day," says Jacob Labogin of Fruition Sales- Ripe to You. The fruit earned its Valentine nickname via UC Riverside–when the fruit is cut lengthwise and turned upside down, it resembles a heart.
Meanwhile pricing on the item is consistent with prior seasons.
