Quality challenges in the Peruvian ginger industry

Peru is once again facing a challenging ginger season, similar to last year. Crop yields are declining, and quality issues are affecting the available supply. Two diseases, Erwinia and Ralstonia, have overshadowed the season and led to quality defects upon arrival. These recurring problems require sustainable solutions to ensure the future of ginger production.

ProGinger Peru, the organization representing Peruvian ginger and turmeric exporters, plans to present an action plan to the government to provide disease-free seeds. Cameron Mistal, founder and CEO of Happy Veg, supports this initiative. "As a member of ProGinger, we welcome this step as it will lead to improved product quality in the coming years," he says.

Due to lower availability and quality concerns, the Peruvian ginger season is coming to an end. Happy Veg has stopped shipping from Peru and is now sourcing products from Central America to minimize quality risks. The Brazilian season is also ending, meaning that until the new harvest begins in July, there will be little to no ginger supply from South America. Currently, China dominates the market, and the next six months are expected to be challenging for ginger supply.

Sustainability and environmental challenges
In addition to disease pressure, agricultural production in Peru continues to threaten the environment. In rainforest regions, large areas are being cleared to make room for crops like ginger. "The future of the ginger industry is being sacrificed for short-term profits. At Happy Veg, we are investing in regenerative agricultural practices to ensure the sustainability of the Peruvian ginger industry," Mistal emphasizes.

Quality for the USA and Europe
Happy Veg was founded in 2019 by Cameron Mistal and is a family-run company based in the USA. The company specializes in exporting fresh ginger, turmeric, and garlic and operates two processing facilities in Peru.
