Protofanousi Fruits ready to upgrade its activity in the yellow kiwifruit market:

"We can manage over 30 hectares of Greek-grown SunGold by next year"

Greek kiwi exports face varied market landscapes across the globe. Mr. Manolis Anastasiadis, export manager of Protofanousi Fruits, says: "The flow of exports to third countries has so far been smooth. On the contrary, European markets are quite subdued. Over the next four months, we expect very good sales to continue in America, Canada, and Brazil, as well as an increase in volumes to European countries. During this kiwi season, our company has harvested nearly 26,000 tons. Therefore, we will have kiwifruit available for our customers until the end of April to mid-May, as we do every year."

"This year, unlike last year, there isn't such a large surplus of big sizes. It is difficult to provide a precise percentage estimate by size category. What will continue is a balance of sizes, with a slight emphasis on smaller sizes," emphasizes Mr. Anastasiadis.

Protofanousi Fruits has exciting news to share regarding its commercial activity with SunGold. Mr. Anastasiadis explains: "We already have three hectares of the SunGold variety, which are now of productive age. With Zespri's approval to expand the cultivation of SunGold in Greece, both we and our partner growers are set to increase cultivation. There is a plan that could lead to over 30 hectares under our company's control by next year. For this, we are in constant communication with Zespri, adhering to the protocol for SunGold's expansion in our country. Final decisions will be made in the coming period. What is certain is that in the coming years, we will actively enter the cultivation of this variety."

"The collaboration between Protofanousi Fruits and Zespri dates back to 2016 when we began packing green kiwifruit for Zespri. At that time, I was in charge of the quality control department. I remember being impressed by the meticulous attention to detail, which remains our partnership's hallmark. Every procedure is outlined in detailed protocols. However, protocols do not replace dialogue. On the contrary, communication is reciprocal, with both sides learning from each other and taking the next step together," stresses Mr. Anastasiadis.

The export manager of the Greek company also comments on changes in the global market: "Italy, once a major producer of green kiwi, has significantly reduced its output. Greece is steadily increasing its green kiwi volumes. Iran and China are also expanding their presence in the markets. I am confident that Zespri's decision to expand SunGold cultivation in the Northern Hemisphere was based on thorough planning. Demand for yellow kiwifruit has been growing steadily worldwide. However, in my view, green kiwi remains dominant. I do not believe its market share will decline due to the increase in yellow kiwi volumes. Similarly, yellow kiwi won't be hindered by the continued popularity of green kiwis, as each type has its dedicated fan base."
