USDA has published the National Retail Report for advertised prices for specialty crops products at major retail supermarket outlets ending during the period of 14 September 2024 to 26 September 2024.
The fall equinox, signaling the commencement of autumn, is slated for Sunday, September 22, 2024. This event, occurring biannually, aligns the sun directly over the Equator, facilitating an equilibrium of day and night durations. Concurrently, the period is characterized by a resurgence of pumpkin-flavored offerings. Current retail promotions are spotlighting squash, a group of vegetables noted for their nutritional profile, including low calorie and fat content, alongside being rich sources of vitamin C, fiber, B vitamins, and vital minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Acorn, butternut, spaghetti, kabocha, and delicata squash are among the recommended varieties for culinary use.
Total ad numbers this week were 269,521, a 11% decrease from last week's total of 302,585. The total for the same week last year was 10% higher at 244,947. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 142,141 (53% of all ads), onions and potatoes 18,677 (7%), vegetables 104,883 (39%), herbs 947, ornamentals 1,438, and hemp 2,382. The number of ads for organic produce was 29,790, 11% of total ads.
The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week were Honeycrisp Apples (2 lb bags) at 27%, Gala/Royal Gala Apples at 18%, Cantaloups at 16% and Hass Avocados at 14%. Significant decreases in price for fruit this week were Red Seedless
Grapes at 23%, Honeycrisp Apples (per lb) at 20%, White Seedless Grapes at 12% and Apple and Processed Juice Marked Cider at 10%. There were no significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week. There were no significant increases in price for vegetables this week. There were only significant decreases in price for Mixed Mini Sweet Peppers at 13% this week.
