The supply of sweet corn looks to be good right now. "It's good but there's not excess supply," says Robert Reesor of Rouge River Farms.
For Rouge River Farms, sweet corn is coming from Virginia and will continue to do so until approximately the middle of October. It's also coming from Ontario and that region will wrap up production sooner, notably by the end of September. "Our Ontario crop has been a very very good crop and Virginia is slightly below average this season," says Reesor.
The next growing region coming on will then be Georgia which should begin its production around October 7th. "For us, that is about a week later than other growers in that area," says Reesor.
Corn demand stays steady
As for demand, it's steady even though there's generally a decline in sweet corn demand following the end of the summer barbecue season and moving into later September. After that, demand settles into its usual fall-winter steady demand.
What about pricing for sweet corn? Right now it's slightly higher than normal for this time of year. "I expect the price will remain strong if the weather in the north stays nice, until the fall Georgia crop comes in a few weeks. As of now, our fall Georgia crop looks good," says Reesor.
Meanwhile, back at Rouge River Farms, it signed a definitive agreement to acquire True North Farms, a Lakeland, Florida-based grower/shipper of sweet corn and other vegetables earlier this month.
