Florida's blueberry season sees lots of UF/IFAS varieties

During Florida's blueberry season, consumers purchasing local blueberries are likely encountering University of Florida (UF/IFAS) bred varieties, despite the absence of specific labeling in supermarkets. Shoppers interested in Florida-grown blueberries can inquire with produce managers for guidance.

Florida's blueberry industry, predominantly operated by family farmers, encompasses over 5,700 acres, yielding approximately 20 million pounds of blueberries each season, with a significant portion planted with UF/IFAS varieties. Additionally, two new Southern Highbush Blueberry cultivars, 'Falcon' and 'FL19-006', are anticipated for commercial release to growers by late 2024 or early 2025, offering high yields of very firm, jumbo-sized berries with favorable taste profiles.
