Supplies of asparagus out of Mexico look to be good right now. “We currently have a steady supply of asparagus for the next several weeks and the quality is excellent,” said Jesse Lopez, commodity account manager for Ocean Mist Farms.
Lopez says supplies of asparagus are steady and will stay that way for the next several weeks.
This is even with the recent Tropical Storm Hilary which earlier this month brought both heavy rainfall and winds to the Pacific Coast of Mexico, the Baja California Peninsula and the Southwestern United States. “Thankfully we weren’t affected by the recent rains and storm so the production has been uninterrupted,” says Lopez. “We did get some rain but not nothing that was of any damage to the crops or operations.”
High market price
That said, the recent storms did affect some other‘s crops which has pushed the market price high for the moment--the more limited supply hit a marketplace with high demand.
Production has remained uninterrupted, even following Tropical Storm Hilary.
Ocean Mist Farms' asparagus growing region is in Baja, Mexico. Its program is virtually year-round with short dips in August and January. The company packs an 11/ct bunch (1 lb) and when supplies allow, typically in the summer months, it also offers a 28lb (28 bunch) box.
