Behind the success of the agricultural season in Egypt, the ghost of losses that haunted farmers

Faced with the shortage of certain agricultural products, and problems of various kinds in the majority of countries of origin, European buyers have fallen back on Egyptian products, says Mohamed Shahen of the Egyptian producer Agro Pro.

"This season we have doubled our broccoli exports to Europe. Our export volumes of oranges and some varieties of pepper for the processing industry have also increased significantly", Shahen said.

This boost in Egyptian exports is due to objective factors such as the winter weather that was favorable for most crops, according to the producer, "we were happy to see volumes exceeded our expectations"

But it is also due to a great human investment: "The global inflation that impacted us last season was a haunting ghost. We were very concerned about rising costs, and very meticulous and relentless in our technical operations. This was the case for all producers, we all had fears of incurring losses due to rising costs and disruptions in the supply chains. This motivated us to make a lot of efforts in production and marketing."

"And if the weather conditions are in our favor today, we look at the situation of other farmers in other countries with an eye of concern. It could happen to us too in the future. That's why we are redoubling our efforts in long-impact investments and technical operations", adds Shahen.

The producer currently says he is intensifying his efforts to open new markets: "We are strengthening our presence in European markets, and have reached advanced stages of negotiation to export to Hungary for the first time".

Agropro is preparing for the spring season with multiple products, concludes the producer: "We will have tomatoes, pepper, cucumber, lettuce, melon, cantaloupe, strawberry, and soon peach and grape".
