This week the 14th edition of Cool Logistics Global Conference took place in Barcelona. It was back to a live event after two years online.
The event was well attended with 135 delegates from 26 countries, feedback from the delegates was very positive. The numerous and varied presentations led to interesting debate and plenty of audience participation. There were also plenty of opportunities for networking with an icebreaker reception and a walking dinner in a stunning setting.
There is a lot of frustration in the sector at the moment around shipping costs and delays, but the some of the big carriers were noticeably absent from the event. Despite this, much ground was covered in finding possible ways to ease the frustration.
The cost of energy was a hot topic and many of the ports are looking at ways to reduce costs and becoming more sustainable through automation and renewables. The merits of moving trucks off the roads and transporting containers via rail or barges. The ports are investing in modern terminals which will be one-stop-shops with inter-modal transport links and systems to go paperless and move container through faster with better tracking.
Speakers and delegates discussed how logistics could be improved: technology and more collaboration and information sharing between the different player was proposed as a solution. This as been done in other industries so why not in logistics?
Cold storage warehousing is facing a massive increase in energy costs and are looking at ways to better use energy and how to produce their own power via renewables.
