Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market Report - Week 32

Price of imported oranges drops, Xinjiang plums enter the market in large volumes

Peruvian blueberries and Chilean lemons recently entered the Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market in week 32. In the same week, the prices of South African oranges and South African lemons declined. Domestic plums from Xinjiang entered the market in large volumes.

Import oranges

South African oranges still dominate the Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market, but the overall supply volume of imported oranges expanded, so the average price declined. The price differences between imported orange varieties grew wider and product movement slowed down.

Differences in size and product quality create differences in price
Most oranges fall within a range of 140-220 yuan [20.76-32.63 USD], which is an average price decline of around 10% compared to last week. The prices of big brand oranges, however, still go up. They sell for around 290 yuan [43.01 USD] per box, because, according to one trader, the brand guarantees high product quality, and the supply volume is limited. In addition to South African oranges, there is also a supply volume of Australian oranges. Their price remains at the same level as when they entered the market in July.

The market for imported lemons is also dominated by South African lemons, although a small volume of Chilean lemons entered the market two weeks ago. South African lemons are in the middle of their sales season. The current retail price is around 150-200 yuan [22.25-29.66 USD] per box, which is lower than two weeks ago, even though the product quality improved. (Right: South African lemons)

The retail price of South African lemons exceeded 300 yuan [44.49 USD] per box around this time last year, but declined by 35% this year. The product quality remained stable. However, the supply volume was smaller last year and so the price was higher, but this year the supply volume expanded, and so the price declined. The current retail price of Chilean lemons is around 130 yuan [19.28 USD] per box. Last year the price of Chilean lemons was around 220-230 yuan [32.63-34.11 USD] per box. This year the price dropped by 40% compared to last year.

Washington cherries entered the market more than a month ago. The cherries are in the middle of their sales season and the supply volume is much larger than in the beginning of the season, so the price declined. The prices range between 300-500 yuan [44.49-74.15 USD] per box.

The product movement is smooth, but the price is not high. The current price is around 170 yuan [25.21 USD] per box, which is 15% less than the price last week, and 26% lower than the price of 230 yuan [34.11 USD] per box around this time last year. The new price makes the plums much more popular than last year. However, consumer power is still weakened by the ongoing pandemic.
