Dominican producers have asked the authorities to prevent the entry of citrus fruits that bring pests into the country. Currently, this sector, dedicated to growing pineapple, lemon, melon, and other citrus fruits, sees a high demand in the country. Industry experts are putting out alerts because of the sensitivity of their products to pests, which make them unfit for human consumption.
One lemon grower said that many companies know they send out fruit with defects and wait until they reach the final destination and then claim ignorance. He complained that the relevant authorities ‘do not do their job’ to stop harmful imports.
