The current fresh ginger market is somewhat complicated. "The new Chinese season has started. But the extremely long transport times are significantly affecting quality. Containers can spend up to 50 days in transit from China. So the quality’s highly variable," says Gerry Li of Vision Fresh in Poeldijk, the Netherlands.

"Prices of new crop Chinese ginger are stable, Brazilian ginger will slowly go out of the market. I think the market will pick up even more soon, once the quality stabilizes slightly. We’re now dealing with the new crop of Chinese ginger, Brazilian ginger, and Peruvian organic ginger and the challenge is sea freight rates and long transit times to have good quality and a year-round supply from all origins. It is a challenge but as a ginger specialist, we will make it possible", says Gerry.
Gerry says the garlic market has leveled out, and prices have risen a little. “There’s plenty of garlic available in China. The Chinese New Year did provide some additional sales last week. This season’s Chinese Nashi pear market is very stable too.”

Vision Fresh also supplies exotics like cassava and eddoes from Costa Rica. But its imported ginger quantities dwarf those volumes. The company gets 20,000 tons of ginger a year at the Rida Trade Logistics' warehouse in Poeldijk. "We focus on providing customers in Europe with the best ginger," Gerry concludes.
