The port of Valparaiso started its containerized railway freight transport service this morning, with the arrival of the first train with 27 export containers from the city of Teno in the Maule Region. This service will work three times a week and its main purpose is to supply the ships of the Maersk CLX service, which, on their way to Europe, dock at TPS on a weekly basis.
This train transport was achieved thanks to a joint effort of the entire logistics chain. It was made possible thanks to the port of Valparaiso, TPS, EFE, FEPASA, and Maersk's commitment to promoting this modality and to increase the movement of cargo by rail to and from the port. This railway freight transport will allow transporting fresh cargo in reefer containers to support the movement of cargo shipped in trucks through La Polvora route.
“The port of Valparaiso has been working for a long time with EPV, EFE, Maersk, and FEPASA to prepare this operation. We have worked hard and made use of all our knowledge and experience so that it is an efficient and safe operation. Chile's foreign trade needs to become more flexible and to be able to adapt to new forms and opportunities. We are very happy that Maersk has trusted us and that the other members of the Valparaiso logistics chain have responded in such a coordinated way,” stated Andres Repetto, TPS Operations Manager.
“This is the joint effort of all the actors in the logistics chain, FEPASA, and Maersk to promote and enhance our city's train service. We are committed to developing sustainable logistics that are complemented by truck transport and that allow increasing the transfer of cargo through our terminals. The new Maersk service will allow us to implement railway transport more, generating continuity in the use of the train for these purposes in Valparaiso,” Juan Marcos Mancilla, the Logistics Manager at Empresa Portuaria Valparaiso, stated.
