Canada: Empire reports $175mln second-quarter profit
Empire Co. Ltd. says it earned $175.4mln in its latest quarter, up from $161.4mln in the same quarter last year, helped by a nearly 5% increase in sales. The Sobeys parent company says its profit amounted to 66 cents per diluted share for the 13-week period ended October 30, up from 60 cents per diluted share a year earlier. Sales in what was the company's 2nd quarter totalled $7.32bln, up from $6.98bln.

Spain: Mercadona to raise salaries by 5% to adapt to inflation
According to newspaper Expansión, the Spanish retail leader - with a market share of close to 25% - has become the 1st major company to take measures to prevent inflation from causing a loss of purchasing power for its more than 93,000 employees in Spain. The figure rises to 95,000 workers if its teams in Portugal are added, whose salaries will also be adapted in that market.
