New Nelson apple variety ‘Roxy’

A new variety of apple developed in Nelson, New Zealand, is set to hit the export markets, after more than two decades of development. Redwood Valley orchardists Bill and Erica Lynch have recently received a patent and global license for their new variety of apple, that bears the name ‘Roxy’.

According to Bill Lynch, the Roxy apple had been developed for both its taste and visual appeal, and was the result of more than 20 years of testing. Lynch told stuff.co.nz that with its distinctive pink hue and mid-range taste, the Roxy apple had been trialled throughout Asia and had proved hugely popular.

According to him. the genetics of the apple went back to the now-extinct heritage gala apple, of which they had some trees in an old orchard on their farm purchased in the 1970s.
