Demand for Polish apples is winding down a bit, although there are still more than enough apples available. Although the season for Gala apples has finished, other varieties are widely in stock. As growers are trying to sell all of their apples before the new season begins, prices have somewhat dropped.
Some Polish apple exporters are still going strong this late into the season. According to Jakub Krawczyk, export manager for Appolonia, demand has slowed down a bit, but there are still large volumes of Polish apples available. “The demand for apples has slowed down a bit, which is expected around this time of the year. One of the big reasons for the lower demand is the fact that the first soft fruit and summer vegetables have appeared. However, there is still good demand in the regions that had a lower apple production this year, like the West or South of Europe. There are still large volumes of apples in stock in Poland, most of the growers are trying their hardest to sell all their product. As it looks now, July and maybe even August will still be trading months. For us as a company, we do not predict any problems with deliveries for these final months of the season.”
Krawczyk states that prices have gone down slightly, especially for apples of lower quality: “In terms of variety, we mostly have Red Jonaprince, Golden, Idared, Gloster and Jonagold available right now. There are also some volumes of Ligol, Champion and Red Chief, but these varieties should finish soon. Gala is finished completely. Prices for export have dropped, it’s because there are more apples available right now and not all growers have place where they can sell their product, so they agreed to sell apples for a slightly lower price. Of course, their price depends on the quality, so for better quality apples people still pay a higher price. However, at the moment we see quite some quantities of apples that had to endure hail for example, and the price for these apples is obviously lower.”
Taking a quick look at the apple trees for next season, Krawczyk feels they’ve avoided disaster so far, and if weather permits it, volumes could be quite high next harvest: “When looking at the next season, right now it seems like there were no problems with lower temperatures. This means that there should be good volumes of apples next season. We still have a couple of months before the new harvest starts, so we’ll need to wait and see how the weather develops. The biggest issue that we could encounter would be hail in the next few weeks, so let’s hope we’re spared those kind of weather conditions.”
