“Depending on the varieties, we’ll have apples right up until the new season starts”

After a really solid month of February, the Polish apple season is still going full steam. According to one exporter, demand was really good up until mid-March. Although the stocks of some varieties are depleting, the exporter is confident he’ll be able to supply his clients with apples right up to the new season, which will start in September.

The Polish apple season is far from over, according to Jan Nowakowski, sales director of Polish apple exporter Genesis Fresh: “We are about two-thirds into the apple season, and export has slowed down in week 13. The past two weeks there have been a lot of promos for the retailers before the Easter holidays. For the upcoming two weeks we will see smaller sales and will start new promos for retailers by the end of April. February was a very good month for export, with solid demand for apples until mid-March, after which point it slowed down a bit.”

Although cold chambers have opened, some varieties are slowly starting to be out of stock, Nowakowski explains. “ULO cold Chambers have opened from December 2020 and apples are in good conditions. Some varieties like Gala is reaching the end of the stocks. We still have just a few tons of Gala to pack. Golden Delicious is moving steadily and the stock is still on the good level. The varieties like Jonagold, Champion, Idared have good sales and the stock will finish in June and July.”

Overall the apple season has been smooth and steady, Nowakowski states. Apples will remain available right up until the start of the new season. “Prices are stable with small growth for the season. The solid demand and limited stock for Gala causes the price to increase at the moment. Depending on the varieties, we will have apples right up until the new season starts in September. The volume will be stocked for our regular clients to supply them all year. The market is stable this season, although we are in second wave of coronavirus Covid-19. Prices will slowly increase due to storage costs and inflation which is also increasing rapidly this year 2021.” He concludes.
