AgroFresh has announced that edible plant-based coatings for products will soon be available under the brand VitaFresh Botanicals. The company specializes in developing systems to preserve the freshness of products.
“VitaFresh Botanicals is an exclusive portfolio of plant-based solutions for a wide variety of crops, from citrus fruit to avocados and mangos. For the coatings, the products use “anti-thirst” technology to enhance the skin’s natural protection, creating a “double-skin” membrane that reduces dehydration and maintains the weight and freshness of the products throughout the supply chain,” as communicated by the company in a press release. “The turnkey solutions are easy to implement within the regular operations of the packing station.”
Created according to the ISO 14001-certified standards of “environmental management system”, these edible coatings offer low-temperature drying, contrary to conventional coatings that require high temperatures and lead to higher energy consumption (up to 40%).
“Our formulation stabilization process helps the operators preserve their products, maintain freshness throughout the supply chain and ship longer distances, therefore generating cost-efficiency and helping producers and packers sell more products worldwide. Additionally, because the VitaFresh Botanicals coatings are edible, they can be used on crops whose skin is eaten and within the European Union.”
