MKC only UK grower to produce year round kale

Molyneux Kale Company (MKC) based in south west Lancashire have been growing kale for over 30 years and are the only UK producer to supply kale year-round. As well as kale they grow cavolo, chard, Italian and oriental brassicas and spring greens.

“Over the years we have developed our own varieties to extend the season, we only sell what we grow here,” explains Chris Molyneux.

Kale is normally difficult to grow between April and June but by growing their own varieties which have been selected over the last 15 years MKC can continue through these months.

“Coloured kales are usually good until November but are not frost hardy, using our own variety we can supply through until March. April to July are still a struggle though. The same goes for the other products: Spring greens, chard, Cavelo, Broccoletto and Winter chicory. MKC have extend the seasons for these crops and are still looking to extend them further.

Chris said that although kale reached its peak a few years ago the sales are still steady. “We only supply loose leaf product, we did try pre-cut for a while but the taste didn’t compare. There is a world of difference between loose leaf and cut produce, this goes for all vegetables, the minute you cut them the flavour changes.”

The company supplies the wholesale trade and Chris admits it's been an up and down year.

“The box schemes have done very well, the produce has a shorter chain and is much fresher with less handling than produce from supermarkets. When the ingredients are prepared in the right way you can get fantastic flavours.
