USDA 2020/2021 Season forecast

Argentina is expected to harvest 1.18 million tons of pears and apples

According to a report published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Argentina will produce 610,000 tons of pears and 570,000 tons of apples in the 2020/2021 season surpassing the 550,000 tons of pears and 480,000 tons of apples it produced in the 2019/2020 season.

The USDA estimates that Argentine pear exports will fall to 320,000 tons (330,000 tons in the 2019/2020 season) and that its apple exports will fall to 110,000 tons (112,000 tons in the 2019/2020 season) due to a strong increase in the Northern Hemisphere's offer.

Domestic consumption of fresh apples will stand at 460,800 tons and pear consumption will stand at 290,000 tons, i.e. 2.2% and 7.4% more than in the 2019/2020 campaign, respectively, mainly due to the reduction of exports.

According to the USDA report, Argentina's main apple variety is the Red Delicious (64% of the total), followed by the Granny Smith (14%), Gala (13%), and the Cripps Pink/Pink Lady (6%) varieties.

Regarding pears, Argentina mainly produces the Packham's Triumph variety (41%), D'Anjou (24%), Williams (16%), Abate Fetel (6%), and Bosc (5%) varieties.
