Production of various apple varieties in China severely reduced

This year, areas such as Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu experienced high volumes of rainfall, which has induced a serious case of black and red spots and water spots on the apple peel in orchards that did not do a good job in plant protection. In addition to poor quality, due to the impact of the general economy, the fruit market this year has been weaker, and shipments have been slower than in previous years. Li Ying, Manager of Qingyang Qingxin Fruit Industry, talked about recent the situation of production and sales of a variety of apples.

In late August, more than ten days of rain in some production areas in Shaanxi and Shanxi had a serious impact on the quality of Gala apples. As some growers wanted to market their crop before the arrival of the National Day, part of the Fuji apples was harvested early. Immediately after the holiday, the new Fuji crop flooded onto the market. However, market prices didn’t fall, resulting in an overall high price of this variety this season. At present, average-grades in Gansu are marketed at 2.5-3 yuan/half a kilo while better-grades are marketed at 3.5-4.5 yuan/half a kilo. It is difficult to predict whether prices will dip in the later period.

In addition, Fujis from Qingyang, which became available in the market in early October, have also suffered cold damages. For orchards that were hit severely, yields reduced by as much as 70%. "The market of Fujis has been good since they became available on the market. The price at the origin is around 3-4 yuan/half a kilo, but the number of traders there is not as good as in previous years. The market situation is currently unclear and the volume being put into storage is not high. It is expected that the market will fall in the later period,” Li said.

In addition to Gala and Fuji, Huaniu apples from Gansu have also been suffering from a serious case of black and red spots, and the commodity rate is very low. Li said, “We anticipated the impact of Covid-19 on the market in the early production season and reduced the area of contracted orchards, but unexpectedly, the commodity rate is abnormally low. Overall, the market supply and demand are still balanced. At present, good-grades at the origin are marketed at above 2 yuan/half a kilo while grade #70 with black and red spots are marketed at 1.4-1.8 yuan/half a kilo.”

Qingyang City Qingxin Fruit Industry has a cold storage facility with a capacity of 20,000-ton and an automatic sorting line. E-commerce platforms are the main sales channels of this company. “Diversified sales is our main advantage. In addition to traditional varieties such as Gala, Huaniu and Fuji, we also have a number of niche varieties to meet consumers' needs for different flavors."
