Production of Chinese honey pomelos 20% lower

Honey pomelos from Fujian are to become available in mid-August, and the ordering season will start soon. Zhang, manager of Pinghe Huaermei Fruit Industry Co., Ltd. talked about production and market expectations of Guanxi honey pomelos this season.

Pomelos from Hainan, Guangdong and other origins become available in the market slightly earlier than those from Fujian. In order to seize market opportunities, some overseas importers began to import from Guangdong in late July. "The variety exported in July was mainly white pomelo from Meizhou, Guangdong. As it was in the early season, the quality of the first exported volumes was not very good, and was low in juice and pulp."

The harvest this season is delayed by about 2-3 weeks compared with previous years. The recent dry weather has resulted in low juice content in the fruit. In addition, this season's production is also nearly 20% lower than in previous years. "Affected by multiple factors, I think the market may be slower this season. However, we will not be able to know how orders and shipment will actually go until the harvest in mid-August. The price at the beginning of the season should not be much different from previous years, but in the mid season (September-October), prices are expected to rise as the season stabilizes."

Europe and Canada are the main export markets of Huaermei Fruit Co., Ltd. The company exports 3,000-4,000 tons of honey pomelos each year. "We will start the ordering season in early August. The Covid-19 situation in overseas markets is still rather severe, which may affect our exports, but we are constantly communicating with customers and adjusting sales strategies in a timely manner based on the situation,” Zhang said.

"Since registering the trade market of Guanxi Honey Pomelos in 2003, the planted area and export volumes of honey pomelo from Fujian have increased year by year. As more and more companies export pomelos from China, the supply in overseas markets has exceeded demand, leading to increasingly fierce market competition and increasingly lower prices.

"In order to provide customers with a better quality product, we built a production and processing center in Pinghe County that covers 200 mu, and the post-harvest products can be packaged and processed according to customer requirements and marketed directly. We hope that by reducing intermediate links and reducing costs, our fruit will have a better advantage in pricing,” Zhang said.

"At present, there are only a handful of honey pomelo companies using automated processing equipment in China, but I think automation will become a general trend in the industry. Firstly, automated processing can greatly reduce the possible damages and losses of fruit during processing. Secondly, mechanical operations will not only reduce the labor costs, but the energy consumption of fully automatic energy-saving equipment is lower than that of older equipment."
