Caito Foods to cut more than 300 jobs in Indianapolis

Indianapolis fruit and vegetable distributor Caito Foods is closing part of its manufacturing operation and will cut more than 300 jobs by May. The job cuts stem from the "recent unforeseen cancellation of a customer contract that makes up the majority of our Fresh Cut business," Caito said in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter sent Thursday to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Layoffs will begin on April 27 and continue over two weeks, Caito said. The Fresh Cut business arm operates out of its east-side facility, 3120 N. Post Road. Positions to be eliminated include directors, managers, production clerks, talent consultants and maintenance technicians.

"This difficult decision was made to support the company’s strategy to deliver locally produced fresh cut fruits and vegetables to its independent and national account customers, as well as corporate-owned retail stores," Caito Foods' parent company SpartanNash said in a statement.

According to eu.indystar.com¸ the statement said the layoffs will not affect Caito Foods' produce distribution business.  In October, Caito closed its Fresh Kitchen operation and laid off 53 workers.
