Mexico: 300,000 tons of citrus at risk in Tamaulipas, due to drought

The Union of Citrus Farmers in Tamaulipas has reported that some 300,000 tons of citrus are at risk. The producer organization has asked the government for support to save this season's fruit harvest. “We asked the government to continue supporting the citrus industry. We are mainly asking for support to fertilize our gardens because our fruit hasn't grown enough due to the intense drought,” said Javier Ibarra Echartea, the leader of the organization.

The municipalities that have been affected the most by the drought are Hidalgo, Padilla, Güemez, Ciudad Victoria, Llera, San Carlos, Soto La Marina, and Abasolo, where the crops of nearly 20,000 producers are at risk.

"Nature has affected us this year via an intense drought. We want to find a way to support our citrus sector. Citrus is the main agricultural economic activity in the area, generating more than 600,000 direct jobs, as well as many indirect ones," said Ibarra.
