Trade between Vietnam and US on the upswing

According to the US Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service, US agricultural exports to Vietnam have skyrocketed. Ted McKinney, undersecretary for trade and foreign agricultural affairs at USDA, said: “Since the United States normalized relations with Vietnam in 1995, our agricultural exports have grown exponentially, reaching a record $4 billion last year. Sales of US food and farm products to Thailand and Myanmar also set records in 2018, topping $2.1 billion and $126 million, respectively.”

The country’s soaring GDP growth is fueling demand for high-value, consumer-oriented products. Vietnamese consumers have a high regard for the quality and safety of American food products, according to FAS. Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar are part of the fastest developing region in the world and account for roughly 221 million of Southeast Asia’s population.

Among the top prospects for US ag exports in Vietnam are fresh vegetables as well. These imports have grown considerably, to reach $920 million last year. However, the United States exported only $1 million, consisting mostly of fresh potatoes.
