Rijk Zwaan invests €10 million in expansion of facilities in Spanish province of Almeria

The Dutch Rijk Zwaan, devoted to research and the international sale of vegetable seeds, is investing around €10 million in the second expansion of its facilities in Almería. The plan is to build a research center for new crops. With this, the company is expanding its R&D activities in Spain.

With this project, Rijk Zwaan Ibérica is expanding its current facilities by more than 3,000 square meters, to a total area of 9,672 square meters. This will serve to expand the current administrative building, the current Cellular Biology facilities and the building that contains the Phytopathology laboratory, as well as the changing rooms and toilets.

There are currently 120 permanent employees on site (to which seasonal workers and employees at other head offices should be added). The construction and redesign of the facilities will ensure that there is room for around 50 extra employees.

The headquarters of Rijk Zwaan Ibérica, which were inaugurated in 1998, were expanded for the first time in 2011, and this will now be the second time. Furthermore, Rijk Zwaan is investing €3 million in its new research center in El Ejido, where work is already underway on the construction of a greenhouse and new offices. In total, Rijk Zwaan is investing more than €13 million in Almeria for the next five years, which shows that the company is investing heavily in the Spanish province.
